The Battle to Control Haiti / Jake Johnson

Even if you're running USAID and you want to do that differently, you can't. Your hands are tied. There is legislation. There are laws on the books that prevent you from doing that kind of work, from buying things locally. You have to use US goods, you have to ship them on US ships. This is the system we created. Why did we create that? Because for policy makers, their interest is not in the development of Haiti. It's their own political careers and their own constituents. And that's what these policies are first and foremost supporting, certainly from the US perspective.

Returning to This is Hell!, Jake Johnston is author of the new book, Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti. Jake is a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Economic and Policy Research. "The Moment of Truth" with Jeff Dorchen follows the interview.
