Crises that are built into the actual model of capitalism, for which the jail or the prison or the cops serve as a kind of solution to manage the rabble, to manage the relative surplus population. And so sheriffs are structurally positioned in our political economy and the way that we operate our political system to be the tip of the spear at the scale of the county in managing those contradictions of capitalism.

Jack Norton and Judah Schept join This Is Hell! to discuss their forthcoming volume, co-authored with Lydia Pelot-Hobbs, The Jail Is Everywhere: Fighting the New Geography of Mass Incarceration available February 14th from Verso. After the interview, Sebastian Wuepper returns with an all-new The Past Inside the Present.
